Report: Cyberattacks Cost Auto Industry $22.5B in 2024

VicOne’s 2025 Automotive Cybersecurity Report finds cyberattacks cost the global automotive industry $22.5 billion last year — including $20 billion attributed to data leakage — up from about $1 billion in 2022.
In the first half of 2024 alone, analysts say, the industry was subject to 103 reported ransomware attacks, most notably the June incident that affected more than 15,000 CDK dealership software users. Threats relating to supply chains ticked down a year-over-year basis while those attributed to third-party integrations and vehicle hijacking spiked.
“Our findings highlight consistent ransomware attacks, a notable rise in estimated financial losses from cyberattacks and an increasing propensity for vehicle hacking among security researchers and threat actors alike,” the report states, in part. “These insights underscore the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect vehicles and the broader automotive ecosystem from evolving risks.”
