Trump May Kill Crash Reporting Rule That Hurt Tesla

Dec. 13, 2024 | |

Reuters reported members of the incoming Trump administration’s transition team have recommended ending a rule that requires automakers to report fatal crashes to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This would come as a relief to Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, a Trump advisor who is among the individuals and trade groups who have publicly opposed the rule.

The report was based on a document reviewed by Reuters. Reporters noted there was no indication as to what role Musk or his associates may have played in crafting the policy, which government officials would likely argue is necessary to ensure “driverless” vehicles are safe to operate and share roads with.

“The recommendation to kill the crash-reporting rule came from a transition team tasked with producing a 100-day strategy for automotive policy. The group called the measure a mandate for ‘excessive’ data collection, the document seen by Reuters shows.”

Through Oct. 15, Tesla reported 40 incidents in which self-driving systems were in use within 30 seconds of a fatal crash, accounting for all but five of such incidents reported by all manufacturers. Tesla accounts for about 1,500 of the more than 2,700 reported incidents since the rule was established in 2021, according to NHTSA data.
