2024 Dealer Census: More Rooftops, Fewer Franchises

Automotive News’s annual dealer census finds U.S. retailers added 171 dealerships in 2024 but subtracted franchises as domestic manufacturers lost scores of stores while their import rivals gained ground.
“Ford Motor Co. lost the most stores among the Detroit 3 at 68, down 2.2 percent year over year. General Motors and Stellantis each shed 0.6 percent of their stores last year,” reports AN’s Gail Kachadourian Howe, lowering American’s total franchise count to 29,829 at the end of 2024.
Fewer franchises and higher overall sales combined to raise the average number of new vehicles retailed per franchise to 511, a 5.8% increase, Kachadourian Howe reports.
