Consumers Might Intend to Buy New, but Reality Pushes Them to Used

According to a new report from Edmunds, U.S. car buyers still overwhelmingly want to buy new vehicles, but they may have unrealistic expectations on price.

An Auto Remarketing report noted the survey found that half of car shoppers would prefer to buy new, one out of every seven of those buyers is targeting a price range around $20,000, which is $7,177 less than the average price of a used car sold in Q3 and $27,542 less than the average price of a new car.

This is also the first time since Edmunds began tracking this data in 2004 that the average sale price of a new car is over $20,000 more than the average used vehicle sale price, analysts said.
