GM Issues Another Recall for Chevy Bolt EV

Nov. 6, 2024 | |

General Motors has initiated another recall for its Chevrolet Bolt EV due to ongoing fire risks relating to its battery system. A few years ago, GM had to recall 142,000 Bolts for a similar issue. This recall only affects 107 vehicles, but NHTSA feels the risk for fire in these vehicles is high if they are fully or nearly fully charged.

Remarkably, the new issue is related to the previous fix. According to the recall posted by NHTSA, the advanced diagnostic software GM installed to resolve the last issue is faulty in itself, which could lead to more fire risk.

“The installation of advanced diagnostic software may have failed,” NHTSA officials stated in a press release. “As such, the high voltage battery could catch fire when charged to full or nearly full capacity.”

GM spokesman Kevin Kelly told the Detroit Free Press that GM is not aware of any fires caused by the issue and that this is a voluntary recall to correctly install the advanced diagnostic software. “The software may fail to identify defective battery modules that require replacement, increasing the risk of a potential vehicle fire.”
