Moreno Says He and Trump Want to Overhaul Car Industry

Senator-elect Bernie Moreno, a former dealer and factory executive, says he wants to scrap policies that produce “cars people don’t want,” starting with emissions standards that have forced automakers to invest billions to produce and subsidize the sale of hybrid and battery-electric vehicles.
Moreno, an Ohio Republican and supporter of President-elect Donald Trump, defeated his incumbent opponent, Democrat Sherrod Brown, to become the first auto dealer elected to the U.S. Senate.
“Anybody who even has a (basic) understanding of how the automobile industry works in America would tell you that the secret sauce is the marketplace,” Moreno told the Detroit Free Press. “But for the first time in automotive history, car companies decided: ‘We’re not going to pay attention to our customers. We’re going to pay attention to our political leaders and make cars people don’t want.’”
