Slowing EV Sales Put California Mandate at Risk

The California Energy Commission reports sales of zero-emission vehicles have plateaued at about 25% of all new units sold in the state after several years of growth. This puts part of the state’s “EV mandate” — a goal of a 35% share by the 2026-MY — at serious risk.
Experts, including dealers, tell the AP’s Alejandro Lazo they see little chance the Golden State’s car buyers will make up the difference to meet lawmakers’ goals.
“The sales are declining,” three-rooftop Orange County dealer David Simpson said. “We’ve filled that gap of people who want those cars — and now they have them — and we’re not seeing a big, huge demand. I don’t see households going 100% EV.”
