Cyberattack on Iowa Dealer Group Spurs FBI Investigation

Ankeny, Iowa-based Karl Auto Group and one of its five Chevrolet and GMC dealerships, Ankeny’s Karl Chevrolet, was struck by a cyberattack that is being investigated by the FBI, reports Todd Magel of KCCI Des Moines.
Dealer Principal Bret Moyer tells Magel that staffers arrived at the dealership Saturday morning to find all its systems down, leading to concerns they — and their reams of sensitive customer data — may have been compromised.
“It’s really frustrating, you know? It’s like you’ve been violated,” Moyer says. “We came in to work here on that Saturday morning and didn’t have phones, didn’t have computers. And it was pretty alarming.”
Moyer notes no ransom has been paid and the group has reached out to customers to apprise them of the situation and potential consequences of a data breach.
