Huetter: Trump Gives Dealers Big, Beautiful Tax Breaks

John Huetter details the myriad benefits President Donald Trump’s recently signed One Big Beautiful Bill Act brings to taxpayers who own auto dealerships in a special report for Automotive News, starting with “bonus” depreciation for dealers who rely on floorplan financing.
The act reverses a recent change to the tax code that made it more difficult to write off the depreciation of assets tied to an interest expense.
“In 2022, these calculations switched from being based upon earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization to simply earnings before interest and taxes,” Huetter writes. “This made it more likely that dealerships would run into the 30 percent threshold and be barred from claiming bonus depreciation.”
Huetter also lists changes affecting estate taxes and pass-through deductions for S corporations among the changes affecting dealership owners.
