Lamborghini Claims Chicago Dealer Made Millions From Unsanctioned Sales

Automobili Lamborghini America has sued Chicago’s Gold Coast Exotic Imports over 32 units the Italian carmaker says were sold in violation of its dealer agreement. One was allegedly purchased by a convicted criminal and unlicensed reseller, according to Chicago Sun-Times reporter Frank Main.
“Lamborghini says its contract with Gold Coast required the dealer to sell to ‘retail customers’ or other authorized dealers,” Main writes, noting attorneys representing both sides have mentioned the possibility of a settlement. “In violation of the contract, Gold Coast misrepresented to Lamborghini that it sold cars to a former Chicago pro athlete and the chief executive officer of a chiropractic clinic in Minnesota, people considered to be retail customers, according to the suit.”
Lamborghini executives say their policies are intended to protect the brand and ensure a premium ownership experience. The manufacturer would likely seek to recoup some or all of the $4 million in sales bonuses paid to the dealership since 2019 to resolve the lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois last year.
