Trump Transition Plans Sweeping EV, Emissions Rollbacks

A document prepared by members of President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team will recommend “sweeping changes” to unwind policies enacted by President Joe Biden to encourage EV production and sales, Reuters reports.

The news follows an earlier Reuters report that appeared to show the Trump transition team will recommend against requiring automakers to report fatal crashes that may involve autonomous driving technology.

Trump made Biden’s “EV mandate” a frequent target throughout the 2024 presidential campaign. Strict federal emissions standards, a $7,500 tax credit for EV buyers and money set aside for EV charging infrastructure all could be on the chopping block.

“Taken together, the recommendations are a stark departure from Biden administration policy, which sought to balance encouraging a domestic battery supply chain, separate from China, with a rapid EV transition,” the report states, in part. “The transition-team plan would redirect money now flowing to building charging stations and making EVs affordable into national-defense priorities, including securing China-free supplies of batteries and the critical minerals to build them.”
