Gallup Poll Finds EV Interest Flat at 51%

Apr. 14, 2025 | |

The latest Gallup poll of American consumers finds 51% own or are open to owning an electric vehicle, unchanged from a year ago and down from 59% in March 2023. Only 11% say they already own or are “seriously considering” the purchase of an EV and 40% say they are open to the prospect.

Eighteen percent of respondents say they own or are seriously considering buying a hybrid and 47% say they are open to hybrid ownership.

Analysts noted the poll was conducted March 3–16, as America’s No. 1 EV seller was under duress.

“The poll coincided with mounting protests and acts of vandalism against Tesla electric vehicle products and facilities, prompted by opposition to Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency. President Donald Trump’s purchase of a Tesla car on March 11, which reportedly led to a $56 billion increase in the company’s stock, occurred toward the end of the field period,” the report states, in part.
