Hybrids Exceed 12% of Market in Q1 as BEV, PHEV Sales Stall

Gas/electric hybrids accounted for 12.4% of U.S. new light-vehicle sales in the first quarter, an improvement of more than four percentage points on a year-over-year basis, while market share remained essentially flat for battery electric vehicles (7.1%) and plug-in hybrids (2.1%).
Electrified vehicle sales are tracked by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which relies in part on data provided by Wards Intelligence.
“About 22% of light-duty vehicles sold in the first quarter of the year in the United States were hybrid, battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, up from about 18% in the first quarter of 2024,” analysts write. “Among those categories, hybrid electric vehicles have continued to gain market share while battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles have remained relatively flat, according to estimates from Wards Intelligence.”
