Feb. 3, 2025 | |

January new vehicle sales reports compiled by Automotive News’s David Phillips show Hyundai (15%), Kia (12%) and Mazda (11%) notching double-digit gains over the same month a year ago.

Hyundai set a new January record with 54,503 units retailed, led by a 74% year-over-year increase in sales of gasoline-electric hybrids such as the Hyundai Tucson SUV. Fellow Korean manufacturer Kia also got a boost from SUVs with record January sales of the Telluride and Sportage.

Other gainers include Subaru, up 4.1% for a 30th consecutive monthly sales increase, and Honda, where an 83% year-over-year gain in hybrid sales pushed the factory (including Acura models) to a 3.8% overall increase over January 2024.

Sales were down at Ford (-6.5%) and Toyota (-1.3%) in January one month after reporting modest improvements of 4.2% and 3.7%, respectively, in year-end sales reports.

Phillips noted Volvo’s January numbers are expected Feb. 4 and other manufacturers report sales on a quarterly basis. His report also includes an analysis of the potential impact of newly announced tariffs on vehicles and parts imported from Canada and Mexico.
