Toyota, Mazda Slip as Hybrids Drive July Sales for Honda, Kia, Hyundai

The latest U.S. new vehicle sales report from the Automotive News Data Center finds Toyota (-0.8%) and Mazda (-13%) suffered year-over-year declines while strong hybrid sales pushed Honda (12.8%), Kia (6.7%) and Hyundai (3.7%) to modest gains.
AN’s David Phillips notes Toyota dealers have been “hamstrung” by limited inventories.
“Supplies of Toyota’s biggest seller, the RAV4, have been extremely tight as the automaker launches a redesigned model at three assembly plants,” Phillips writes. “RAV4 sales fell 21 percent in July and are down 34 percent year to date.”
Subaru eked out an 0.8% year-over-year improvement in July after leading all manufacturers with an 18% increase in June. Mazda’s decline followed a June record of 37,167 new units.
Several U.S.-facing manufacturers share sales data on a quarterly basis. Phillips’s report includes insights from factory executives, an updated sales forecast and the latest incentive spending figures from JD Power and GlobalData.
