VW Holds Prices Through June, Rumored to Be in Tariff Talks

Volkswagen USA will extend the price freeze on new U.S.-sold units expected to expire at the end of May to at least the end of June, according to Motor1 and other sources.

The German automaker was one of a number of OEMs that pledged to hold prices or offer employee discounts as new tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts have taken effect. Motor1’s Anthony Alaniz notes the news coincides with rumors that VW is among a small group of factories working with Trump administration officials to carve out an exemption.

“VW didn’t say what will happen at the end of June,” Alaniz writes. “A Reuters report today alleged Volkswagen, along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, are working to make a deal with the U.S. government regarding the president’s tariffs on imported vehicles. The report says that a deal could happen sometime in June, which would result in the three heavily investing in the country.”

VW builds the Jetta and Taos at its Volkswagen de México plants in Puebla and Silao. Earlier this month, Ford Motor Co. told its U.S. dealers prices for the Mexico-built Mustang Mach-E, Maverick and Bronco Sport will increase by up to $2,000 in June. Executives said Ford had yet to pass the full cost of tariffs on to consumers.

On Thursday, the U.S. Court of International Trade ruled President Donald Trump’s use of the Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose some new tariffs was illegal. The tariffs on imported vehicles and parts are industry-specific and not subject to the ruling.
